The world has always been notorious for being cold to those people in the most need. This seems to be even truer for those people affected by disease. Over hundreds of years the world has seen millions of people suffering. The great news is because of people like Anita Dasilva Ibru, people of Nigeria have a place to go and the medical assistance they need.

The Erelu Adebayo Foundation provides much needed assistance to women and children in Nigeria. Without this foundation, many children and women would literally die. Many people around the world do not realize how many households in Nigeria are led by children. Just as many are homes without fathers and led by widows. Dasilva works in this foundation.

Dr. DaSilva-Ibru is a member of the board of ERAF, a non-profit non-governmental organization that is dedicated to the rehabilitation and assistance of widows and orphans in Nigeria. The organization targets women and children in areas where the unemployment and HIV infection rates are highest, ensuring that the help that they provide reaches the people who need it the most. There are a number of different programs designed to improve the lives of women and vulnerable children, including an orphanage and feeding program. Hospice care is provided for the comfort and care of terminally ill HIV patients and scholarships are available which allow children to attend school. Along with these programs, widows and older teenage girls are given job skills training so that they can become self-supporting by generating a sustainable income on their own. Together, Dr. DaSilva-Ibru and ERAF are truly dedicated to making life better for as many women and children in Nigeria as possible.

The mission of ERAF, otherwise known as the Erelu Adebayo Foundation, is to provide for the rehabilitation and aid of the most vulnerable of Nigeria’s women and children. While there are a number of programs designed to help widows and older teenagers attain the skills they need to provide for their families, the organization also runs a number of programs aimed specifically at children. ERAF was founded by Erelu Angela Adebayo, the wife of the former governor of Ekiti State, and is run as a non-profit non-governmental organization. Founded in 2001, it has been highly successful at implanting its many programs targeting widows, orphans, and vulnerable children in areas of high unemployment and HIV rates.

The ERAF Children’s Home is an orphanage that gives a loving and comforting home environment to orphaned and vulnerable children. The Children’s Home is designed to be a home of the highest caliber for these children who have nothing else in the world. They also partner with a number of different agencies to find loving and stable families for as many of the children as they can. This home is just one of the many achievements of the Erelu Adebayo Foundation, and one dedicated solely to meeting the needs of vulnerable children. With a good home and the prospect of adoption, many of these children find a much better life than they would have known on the streets.

These programs, including the Children’s Home, are overseen and funded by the sponsorship of the five-member board. The board consists of: Erelu Angela Adebayo; Chairman and Founder; Dr. Kemi Ibru, a practicing doctor at Ideal Eagle Hospital; Dr. Olusola Bob-Egbe, Medical Director of Faratori Eye Center; Mrs. Ronke Okusanya, Executive Chairman of BSES; and Agatha A. JohnPaul, Programme Officer for ERAF. Together these five prestigious women have changed the lives of hundreds of children in Nigeria.
